సర్దార్ వల్లభాయ్ పటేల్ కి మొదట్లో గాంధి అన్నా అయన పద్ధతులు అన్నా పెద్దగా సదభిప్రాయం ఉండేది కాదు. 

ఆ రోజుల్లో తను న్యాయవాద వృత్తి ద్వారా లక్షలు సంపాదించాడు.

ఒకరోజు గాంధిగారు అహ్మదాబాద్ వచ్చారని తెలిసింది, కానీ కలిసేందుకు ఆసక్తి చూపకుండా ఒక ధనిక క్లబ్ లో ఏదో ఆట ఆడుకుంటున్నారు.

ఒక స్నేహితుడు వచ్చి గాంధీ గారు అహ్మదాబాద్ కు వచ్చారు కలుద్దామని పటేల్ తో అన్నాడు.. దానికి పటేల్ ఆ గాంధీని కలిసినంతమాత్రాన, ఉపన్యాసం విన్నంతమాత్రాన మన దేశానికి స్వాతంత్ర్యం రాదు అని ఆ అతడితో చెప్పాడు. దానికి ‌తన స్నేహితుడు దీటుగా ఇక్కడ మనం కూర్చుని ఆడితే స్వాతంత్రం వస్తుందా అని ప్రశ్నించాడు. 

ఆ మాటల ప్రభావం ‌ద్వారా కలిగిన అంతర్మధనం వల్లభాయ్ పటేల్ ను గాంధేయ మార్గం వైపు నడిపించి‌ దేశానికి స్వాతంత్రం తీసుకురావడంలో సహాయం చేసింది.
