TELI 2018 Assignment: Teaching Plan for Teaching English as L2 to Young Learners

1.      Choose a topic such as journeys, water, birds, street vendors, night…. – for children studying in 4th, 5th or 6th standard in a low-fee paying, private school in your village / town /city.
2.      Make a web of activities related to your chosen topic thinking about different areas such as Geography and History/Math and Science/Craft and Art/Storytelling, Poetry and Drama.
3.      Outline the broad teaching plan by planning a pre-task, a task and a follow-up on the chosen topic that would engage the class for a one-hour lesson.
4.      In what ways will you bring the children’s first language into teaching this topic?
5.      Comment on the potential of the topic chosen and the procedures planned for language learning.

My Response:
I also came from a low-fee private school in my home town Kadapa. Now I am remembering the 6th class Telugu subject lesson “Hyderabad Tour”. According to my old memories, now I am interested in selecting the topic “Journey” for 6th-class students.

The setting of the school:
The school I selected is low fee private school, which is recognized by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. The community near to the school will speak in Telugu language only. The first language in the school is also Telugu & second language is English, and it is the medium of that school. Even though the textbooks are in English, the explanation is to happen in both Telugu & English languages. Teachers and students both are staying in the same community only. In that school, I am selecting 6th grade, there is 40 minutes of classes daily for each subject. Daily each subject class will be there, but different timetable every day. The strength might be 30 to 35 students. School will work from Monday to Saturday (2nd Saturday might be a holiday).

Pre plan:
I will try to take 20 minutes for teaching lesson on “Hyderabad Tour” and 60 minutes time for discussion on journey.
In two classes, one session is on Friday and another on Monday. According to the academic plan, first I try to teach the lesson “Tour of Hyderabad” and later include our topic journey also with web of geography and History, Mathematics and Science and Storytelling, etc.
Firstly, I feel the strong & main purpose of putting language in the curriculum is to develop children’s communication and expression through the medium of textbook and teacher. I feel this is the phenomena of the language, phenomenon is like the situation that is observed to exist. So I feel, whatever I teach in class that need to develop children’s communication & expression skills, not only children but also for me. I feel teaching is not the act of giving knowledge, it is part of sharing knowledge. I feel this because, the prime and fundamental features of education is teaching and learning, if this two will not happen, I feel there is no education at all. I feel education is like enlightening experiences, that means which makes conscious on our life experiences.
{Note: Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Allopathy, etc. are the different types for treating disease, all this have aim to cure disease, but their approach is different. Here it is difficult to judge which is best and which is least, because it is depend on their (patient) belief. Here I am trying to go in a one of the approach which is according to my feeling with some rationality, which (perceptions with rationality) I am learn-t(ing) from Azim Premji University}
First I will read that lesson by understanding the main objective of the subject, the phenomenon of a tour is a journey for pleasure in which several different places are visited, visited means go to see and spend time with (someone/someplace) socially, and phenomenon of journey is an act of travelling from one place to another place.

My teaching plan is to make them to express and communicate their journey in that place. I will try to make them to go for a tour, travelling from place to another place by spending some time with that place socially.

In this most of the children are from middle class and lower middle class, so I can’t make them to go far tour. There all children are coming from nearby community only. I will try to make to visit their home from school with web of geography and History, Mathematics and Science and Storytelling, etc. by making them to spend some time on their journey towards home with more consciousness. Here I am bringing consciousness in a deliberative way to make the web of activities related to mathematics, science, geography, etc. I feel all subject have dual nature which is subjective (internal) & objective (external) in nature. I feel science subject subjective form is “Experimentation & Observation” and objectivity of science course is theories/principles etc.  I feel language subjective form is “Expression and communication” and objective form is narratives, poems, stories, prose, etc. I feel Mathematics subjective form is “Logics and patterns” and objective form is theorems etc. These all subjective things are interrelated with each other. When they (I) become conscious on subjective part of subjects, then I feel I can bring wed of all activities that means history, mathematics, geography, storytelling, etc.
So I want try to focus on source of these subjects, student’s observation (Science), student’s past experiences (History), student’s expression/storytelling (language), understanding others (social) and student’s logic and pattern (Math’s), student’s interaction with nature (geography), etc.
For making them to conscious on their subjective parts, I also need to conscious (openness) on my experiences. So according to these assumptions I want to make a pedagogic plan.

Creating module for teaching “Journey” to the students:
On Friday class first 20 minutes, I will try to teach the lesson “Hyderabad Tour” which is in the curriculum, first I will ask class, anyone visited Hyderabad, I will ask them to describe their tour. If I get the answer which is in curriculum, I tell them to remember it. (I will try to do this quite speedily). Remaining twenty minutes I will try to explain about home work.
The activities which I planned was giving home work to the children as “Journey towards Home" that means going to home from school including return journey also. And Sunday when they go to outside to their home anywhere, they need to reflect. I want to take this activity only for making the web of activities which includes all subjects. For web of activities I need to take subjective things only, because those are inter-related in the psyche.
That means geography that means “Human interaction with nature”, Mathematics that means “Logic and Patterns”; Art means as “Mixing of subject with the object”. Story telling means expressing and communicating.

 “While walking to their home they need to count time; how much time it took to complete journey. And while returning back how much time it takes to come back to school. If you see the difference in time find out the reasons”. This you do on once including return journey. Here for counting time Math’s will come, in finding out the reasons history will come, while observing science will come. Partially 
“While going what all things you observed and how you are behaving with nature around you. And later in how many ways you can mingling with that nature, like how you are walking, how you are approaching your behaviour with yourself”. Here while they are observing science will come, while they are behaving with/in the nature Geography will comes, how they are acting differently in with the nature art will come. While they are expressing in class “Storytelling and language will come”. This is their homework on Saturday (or) Sunday.

In Monday class, the students will share their reflections in class. I think this discussion will happen for 40 minutes, I will ask them to share in English, I will encourage them to speak in English only, if they have any problem I ask them to share in Telugu only. I will also share my reflections/thoughts to the students. I will optional assignment for them to write in their dairy in their preferable language.
In this school, I will first read the lesson in English and later translate and explain line by line in Telugu, but for teaching this particular lesson “Hyderabad tour” I will go with Telugu language only, because of less time”. This is in classroom context.

Here children and I will use first language while doing the activities outside classroom as Home work.
This is one kind of approach to use in the classroom, there will be different kinds of approaches also, so I will not try to judge this approach is only best, good, etc.
